Our philosophy

Development,
not drills.

Why we built Her Prep Academy, and how we develop every player who trains with us.

01

Where we're from

We both grew up playing basketball in the East Bay — Arnav at Alhambra High in Martinez, Elian at Benicia High — and both went on to play at the junior college level. The game gave us structure, confidence and some of our closest friendships. Since then we've spent our time coaching and training young players in the same gyms we grew up in.

02

What we saw

In those gyms, the opportunities weren't equal. Boys had trainers, academies and programs built around them. Girls with the same drive often got less: fewer dedicated coaches, fewer structured options, and training that was designed for someone else and handed to them. Too many talented players were left to figure it out on their own.

03

Why now

Women's basketball is in the middle of a historic rise — sold-out arenas, record audiences, and a generation of stars that young players can finally see themselves in. More girls than ever are picking up a ball and setting their sights on the next level. But the training options haven't kept up, and very few development programs are built specifically for female players.

04

What we believe

Women's basketball deserves its own path, not a copy of the men's. Every girl who loves this game should have access to real, structured development — at every age, every skill level, wherever she lives. Her Prep Academy is our answer: a complete training platform built for her game, from her first fundamentals to the college court.

How we develop players

A structured path.

A curriculum organized by age, skill level, position and goals — designed around female basketball players and how they develop.

01

A map, not a menu

Most online training is just “here's today's workout.” We give every player where she is, where she needs to go, and the exact path to get there — Book, Chapter, Phase, Workout.

02

Built around her

The curriculum, the progressions and the athletic development are all designed around female players. From Book 2 on, every workout ends with athletic development — landing, deceleration, single-leg strength and core work.

03

Earn the next step

Assessments gate advancement and benchmarks measure progress. The final phase of every chapter is a test-and-review week, so she moves up when she's ready — not before.

Our story

Built by coaches
who love the game.

Her Prep Academy is an online training platform dedicated to female basketball players, ages 8 through college.

Our mission

A clear path for every player.

We want every player to know what she's working on, why it matters, and what comes next. Our curriculum takes players from their first fundamentals to the college game, one step at a time.

Our promise

Real coaches behind every plan.

This isn't an app that hands out random workouts. When she joins, our coaches review her Player Assessment and game film, place her in the right book and chapter, and follow her progress from there. Between us we bring years of private training, AAU and high school coaching, and running basketball programs and events — and every player gets that experience behind her plan.

The team

Meet the coaches.

Co-founder & Head Coach

Elian Medrano

Elian has run his own training business in the East Bay for five years, working one-on-one with youth athletes on basketball skills, strength and athletic development. He has been head coach of East Bay Champions AAU for two years and spent three seasons as an assistant coach for College Park High School's freshman team.

As a player he was a section champion at Benicia High: a two-time All-League pick (First Team), two-time team MVP, and he still holds the school record for threes in a game. He went on to play college basketball at Solano College. He studied kinesiology, trained in strength and mobility under Coach Matt Molina at Stretch N Go, and is finishing his Certified Personal Trainer certification. The Her Prep curriculum is built on the system he uses with his own players.

Co-founder & Head Coach

Arnav Kumar

Arnav has played competitive basketball for more than ten years, at the junior varsity, varsity and junior college levels. He now trains players of his own, sitting down with each family to set goals and build a plan that fits.

He runs the business side of Her Prep Academy: memberships, camps and events, and making sure every family is taken care of. He also leads day-to-day operations at a youth sports and training facility in the East Bay, running the facility, managing staff and creating a great experience for the athletes and families who train there. In 2025 he organized events for Lights Out Basketball, recruiting players and running events of up to 40 athletes. He studies business and marketing at Cal State East Bay.

Questions

FAQ.

Everything parents and players ask before they start.

Female basketball players, ages 8 through college, at every level — from first-time players to college athletes. The curriculum, the progressions, the athletic development and the coaching support are all dedicated to the women's game and how female athletes develop.

Take the free Player Assessment — 15 quick questions on ball handling, shooting and passing, plus an optional shooting video and game film. You get her Player Profile right away. Once she's a member, our coaches use it (and her film) to match her to the right book and starting chapter, so she never wastes months training at the wrong level.

That's exactly what the chapter system is for. Our rule is: your age determines your training environment — your skill determines your chapter. An advanced 10-year-old can test into the older side of a boundary, and a beginner 13-year-old can start where she actually is instead of struggling through content she isn't ready for.

Yes. Each chapter is designed as a month of training, with four one-week phases — but you complete it on your own schedule. We recommend four training days a week. And the final phase of every chapter is a dedicated test-and-review week, which doubles as a catch-up week if life got in the way.

Every session is structured the same way: a warm-up, then three skill blocks — ball handling, finishing and shooting — with passing drills built in from Book 2 and game skills pulled together in every book's Game Ready chapter. From Book 2 (ages 11–13) on, each workout ends with an Athletic Development finisher: 5 minutes of bodyweight landing, balance and stopping work in Book 2; deceleration, first-step explosiveness, single-leg strength, core and sprints in Book 3; loaded strength and recorded testing in Book 4. Sessions scale from 45–60 minutes in Book 1 to 90–120 in Book 4.

Free drills give you workouts. Her Prep Academy gives you a development system: a curriculum with a starting point and a progression, assessments that gate advancement, and benchmarks you can measure. “We don't sell drills — we build development, and a pathway.”

Memberships are open now, and every plan starts with a 3-day free trial. All four books are live in the Her Prep app, and new drill videos are added as our coaches film them. Start from the Membership section.

Every plan — Basic, Premium and Elite, monthly or annual — starts with 3 days free. You enter a card at checkout, but you aren't charged until the trial ends. Cancel any time before then from My account → Manage billing and you won't pay anything. During the trial she takes her player assessment and gets her first 3 workouts; everything else in her plan unlocks automatically when the trial ends.
